The Greek god Apollo

  • On the desolate rocky island of Delos, Leto gave birth to Artemis, Apollo’s older sister. Nine days later Apollo was born. Their father is Zeus. When Apollo was four days old he was very strong and anted to kill the python sent by Hera, the wife and sister of Zeus. The python was sent to chase Leto, Apollo’s mother, because Hera was jealous of Leto because she was Zeus’ lover. So in her jealousy, Hera sent the python to not let Leto find a place to give birth.
  • When Apollo shot the python, who had been terrorizing his mother, with a bow and arrow at the spot he was born he played a song of victory on his lyre. At this moment Apollo became the god of music.

  • Because Apollo was such an overachiever in everything he did, he was considered Zeus’ favorite son. He showed great talent when he shot the python that was chasing his mother with a bow and arrow.

  • Apollo’s son Asclepius found ways to keep mortals from dying because he was advanced in medicine for his time. Zeus was angered by this so he struck Asclepius with a lightning bolt, killing him.

  • Apollo was angered by the murder of his son Asclepius, he went to Mount Olympus and killed the Cyclopes that made Zeus’ thunderbolts. As a result of this Zeus sent Apollo to do slave work for King Admetus of Pherae. Also, Apollo was stripped of his godhood.

  • When Apollo reclaimed his godhood, he went back to Mount Olympus. His presence made Aphrodite jealous and she instructed her son Cupid to make Apollo fall in love with the goddess Daphne so she would smile once again. Daphne, the personification of the laurel tree which was a symbol of Apollo’s love for her, ended up changing herself into a tree to escape Apollo.

  • After regaining his godhood, Apollo tricked his sister Artemis in to killing Poseidon’s son, Orion, after she started to fall in love with him. Apollo did this in order to remind his sister of her chaste values.

  • Apollo favored the side of the Trojans in the Trojan War. He bestowed on the Trojan princess, Cassandra, the gift of prophecy and made people not believe her predictions which caused Troy to fall to the Greek Armies.

  • Apollo Delphinus was the god in the form of a dolphin and was honored at Delphi, a location in the mountains. Apollo killed a wicked serpent at Delphi and became patron god of the oracle

  • Apollo is often called Sol, the Latin word for sun, in stories where he is referred to as the god of the sun. Apollo drives his chariot of fiery horses across the sky to bring light to the world and begin each day.

Jayme's Apollo Writing

Explanation of Colors and Music

I chose the reds, oranges, and yellows because Apollo is the Sun god. The music is intense because during the battle between Odysseus and the suitors, Apollo aids Odysseus in shooting the arrows. At the end there is triumphant music because Odysseus killed all the suitors.
